It was only ever supposed to be temporary. John and Melissa moved to the iconic Coonawarra region thirty years ago intending to, in John’s words, “stay a little while”.

They bought a parcel of land ringed by tall Red Gum Eucalypts, and with natural wetlands dotted with Ottelia Ovalifolia, a native water lily. In 1993 they planted 2 Ha of Cabernet Sauvignon and over the next 3 years expanded the vineyard to 9 Ha. All these years later John and Melissa are still there.

John spent more than twenty years working within the Coonawarra region as a winemaker. He and Melissa then turned their energy towards their own projects; the restaurant Fodder and wine label Ottelia. Now they’re joined by the second generation, their eldest daughter Matilda and her partner Paul.

Matilda and Paul left the bright lights of Melbourne in 2017 to help run the family business – trading late-night knock-offs for early vintage rises. Matilda is the Wearer of Many Hats working alongside John on the wine side of the business. Whilst Paul, Dietary Sommelier (or chef), manages the Tasting Room & Restaurant with Melissa. Since moving, they’ve never looked back and the only thing they miss about Melbourne is the lack of dumplings in Coonawarra.

Together they’re embarking on another chapter for Ottelia, with the reopening of their freshly renovated restaurant and brand-new Tasting Room, they’re excited to share their passion for the food and wine of the Limestone Coast.

We recently had the pleasure of dining at Ottelia in Coonawarra and we cannot recommend it enough. The service staff were wonderful - incredibly friendly, attentive and helpful, always going the extra mile to ensure our lunch was enjoyable. The food was absolutely amazing - each dish was beautifully presented and bursting with flavor, with spot-on wine pairings. The ingredients were fresh and locally sourced, and the entire experience was a true delight. And speaking of wine, Ottelia's wines are absolutely delicious - be sure to try them during your visit. The property itself is beautiful and impeccably maintained, with stunning views of the vineyards. All in all, it was a fantastic dining experience and we would highly recommend Ottelia to anyone looking for a luxurious and delicious meal in Coonawarra.
