Highly respected Coonawarra Vignerons Association Members Wendy Hollick and Doug Bowen were inducted as Patrons of the Association at the recent 34th annual Coonawarra Vignerons Cup
Both were individually recognised by Coonawarra Grape and Wine Incorporated for their outstanding contribution and long term support to the development and promotion of the Coonawarra wine region.
“Along with Ian Hollick and daughters Mel and Kate, they planted a vineyard, built a winery established a cellar door and restaurant, and developed a successful wine brand.”
Not only was she recognised for her contribution within the family wine business, but also for her commitment to wine and food education, and to the regional and state wine community.
Sue highlighted several key roles that Wendy had taken on during her professional career including as President of the former Coonawarra Vignerons Association (CVA) from 1998-2000, and as a member of the Wine Tourism Advisory Board of SA in 2001, which was a group that reported to the SA Tourism Commission and ultimately the Minister of Tourism.
“He graduated from Roseworthy College (winemaking course) in 1971 … married shortly afterwards, and arrived in Coonawarra at the tender age of 21.
“He has a passion for quintessential Coonawarra, and has always been a great supporter and ambassador for our region,” Greg said.
Like Wendy, Doug was also very active in the former CVA, joining it from the day it was founded in 1983, where he held the position of treasurer for most of the years between 1986 and 2005. Doug also served as president in 1990 and 1991.
“Fittingly, Doug was chairman of the Coonawarra Vignerons Race Day Committee for 10 consecutive years, all of which saw the event continue to evolve to what it is today.”
Mr Clayfield said Doug’s commitment to the region was further exemplified by his passion to produce high quality fruit and wines at Bowen Estate.
At the conclusion of both awards, a statement was read out on behalf of Doug Balnaves, the other patron of Coonawarra, who was unable to be at the presentation.
‘I am particularly disappointed to miss the installation of Wendy and Doug as patrons of Coonawarra. Both Wendy and Doug have given outstanding service to the wine industry and to the wider community.”
