Next Gen Leader: Sally McDonald selected for Great Wine Capitals Executive Business Program

The Coonawarra wine community is celebrating the recognition of one of its own, with Sally McDonald of Zema Estate selected as a 2026 scholarship recipient in the highly regarded Great Wine Capitals Executive Business Program.

A valued member of the Zema Estate team and broader Coonawarra Wine Community, Sally McDonald will participate in the 2026 GWC Executive Business Program.

Sally is one of just ten South Australian wine and tourism professionals chosen to participate in the program, which supports the development of emerging leaders across the state’s globally recognised wine regions.

Now in its second year, the Great Wine Capitals Executive Business Program provides participants with an immersive learning experience focused on strengthening leadership capability, fostering innovation, and building resilience within the wine and tourism sectors. Delivered by Adelaide University and backed by the South Australian Government, the initiative reflects a strong commitment to investing in the future of the industry.

Coonawarra Vignerons Acting Executive Officer Heidi Guyett said Sally’s inclusion in the program is a proud moment for the region.

“Coonawarra has long been defined by its people as much as its wines, and Sally’s selection is a wonderful reflection of the talent, passion and dedication that exists within our community,” Ms Guyett said.

“Opportunities like this not only support individual growth but strengthen the future of our region as a whole. We’re thrilled to see Coonawarra represented among the next generation of industry leaders.”

As a key member of the team at Zema Estate, Sally brings a strong connection to family-owned winemaking, regional collaboration, and the continued evolution of Coonawarra as a premium wine and tourism destination.

Sally McDonald said she was honoured to be selected for the program.

“This is an incredible opportunity to learn from industry leaders, build new connections, and bring fresh ideas back to Coonawarra,” she said.

“I’m proud to represent our region and contribute to its continued growth and success.”

Coonawarra’s inclusion in the 2026 cohort highlights the region’s ongoing commitment to innovation, leadership and excellence — ensuring its place at the forefront of Australia’s wine landscape for generations to come.

Running over six days in May, the program will explore key areas including identifying new business opportunities, adopting sustainable practices, effective negotiation, and brand development. Participants will also connect with leading international experts through the Great Wine Capitals Global Network — an alliance of 11 of the world’s most renowned wine regions.
