On August 8th, the Redman family will auction a 50-year complete vertical of its Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon with Langton’s. This online auction is a rare opportunity to own a chapter of Australian winemaking, with one bottle of each vintage from 1971-2021 having been carefully stored at the family winery. The auction will run until 7pm August 18th, 2024.
The Redman name is synonymous with medium-bodied, intensely flavoured Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon. Whilst the Redman story dates to 1908 and they have long been producing Shiraz, it was only in the late 1960s that Owen Redman realised the potential for Cabernet Sauvignon. 1970 was the first release, with 550 magnums produced.
In 2023, the Redman family hosted an intimate celebration of the 50-year milestone, showcasing the complete collection of Cabernet Sauvignon dating back to the original 1970 vintage. Now, wine enthusiasts can purchase this complete 50-Year Redman Cabernet vertical, with one bottle of each vintage of Redman Cabernet from 1971-2021 available to purchase as a complete vertical collection.
The wine is in pristine condition, having been carefully stored in the winery cellar in Coonawarra. The Redman family has been a part of the fabric of Coonawarra for 116 years and this marks a unique opportunity to own a piece of Australian wine history.
Fourth-generation Winemaker Dan Redman noted, “My Grandfather, Owen Redman had the foresight to lay down wine from each vintage of Cabernet produced, a tradition continued by my father, Bruce, and Uncle, Mal. Besides Penfold’s Grange, there are not many complete verticals like this that have ever been auctioned in Australia. So, this is a collection showcasing a window of Australian wine history.”
“It is a rare opportunity to see how the wines have evolved, showcasing winemaking styles during different climates, and celebrate how beautifully Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon can age. The wines are an incredible body of work, with some notable stand-out vintages and winemaking notes for each year. With only three winemakers at the helm across five decades of Cabernet Sauvignon production and just two viticulturists tending to the vines, we have an intimate knowledge of our vineyards and Coonawarra’s terroir.”
Langton’s Head of Auctions and Secondary Market, Michael Anderson, noted, “Family-owned wine brands like Redman offer an incredible opportunity to witness the evolution of Australian wine. This rare collection from the Redman family presents a glimpse into the history of Coonawarra. We don’t see many 50 consecutive-year verticals like this; it’s something special.”
The auction will commence on 8 August, and run until 7pm on 18 August, 2024. There are also some individual bottles, Redman magnums and an imperial available including; 1971 1.5L Magnum Redman Cabernet, 1976 1.5L Redman Cabernet Magnum, 2012 1.5L Redman Cabernet Magnum, 2004 6L Imperial, 1974 Redman Cabernet Sauvignon.
