There is now one more reason to visit the Coonawarra Wine Region with the addition of a new wine tasting and sales outlet. New kid on the block, Peter Thompson Wines have become the 28th Cellar Door to open along the famed Coonawarra strip, opening their doors to the public late last month.
Involved in viticulture since 1971, Peter Thompson has a rich history in the industry with vineyards from Margaret River in Western Australia to King Valley in Victoria.
Purchasing his first block in Coonawarra in 2006, Mr Thompson’s brand has continued to grow with 3 other vineyards in the region, in addition to a Kongorong vineyard. The success of his brand and the expansion of his range has seen Peter Thompson Wines open up a cellar door.
Opening the new cellar door along Penola’s main street, Church Street, in October, Mr Thompson looked forward to providing another destination in the region. “We’re pretty much in the ideal location here- central to the Penola township and an easy stop on the way out to Coonawarra”, he said. “Penola and Coonawarra is an amazing region and we just want to do our part to celebrate and promote that”.
Opening until 6pm daily, the cellar door gives visitors to the region a chance to extend their day of wine tasting.
“We wanted to open a little later than others, to enable visitors the opportunity to stop in on their way back to their accommodation, at the end of their day.” “The cellar door is walking distance from a lot of accommodation so it makes it an easy stop”.
With 10 wines on offer, from both t brand’s Coonawarra and Kongorong vineyards, Mr Thompson thinks its the “bee’s knees”. “We are just really proud to have opened and to be offering a new cellar door in the region”, he said.
Peter’s daughter, Sam Evans, will be present at the cellar door in addition to the Cellar Door Manager, Peter Hughes. Locals and visitors alike are invited to pop in and visit the new cellar door and to take part in a tasting to see what Peter Thompson Wines is all about.
