Coonawarra celebrates Australian Women in Wine Awards – AWIW Winemaker of the Year

The winners of the 2018 Australian Women in Wine Awards were announced on Friday 16 November 2018 – at the largest ever gathering of Australian women in wine – in Sydney. Many Coonawarra wineries joined the live coverage of the awards, cheering on our three nominees recognised across three of a total eight separate categories, including:

  • Winemaker of the Year – Kate Goodman of Penley Estate
  • Owner/ Operator of the Year – Kirsty Balnaves of Balnaves of Coonawarra
  • Cellar Door Person of the Year – Michelle Stehbens of Katnook Estate

The awards ceremony was streamed live via the Australian Women in Wine Facebook page to viewers across Australia and around the world. Key figures from the wine industry, including Jancis Robinson and Joe Fattorini, even participated in the day from abroad by sending in video messages of greeting and support.

We are excited to share the award recipients and congratulate Penley Estate’s Kate Goodman, the AWIW Winemaker of the Year. Kate has been working with Penley Estate our member winery in Coonawarra since 2016 with the brief to make the wines more relevant and contemporary. Kate’s results for Penley are a success story which has opened up new export markets. We raise our glass and toast to Kate.

From Sydney… to NEW YORK!
The AWIWA also announced that, in partnership with Wine Australia, the 2019 Awards will be held in New York on Tuesday 17th September as part of Aussie Wine Month, which is set to be the largest Australian wine promotion ever held in the USA. Further information about this will follow in coming weeks.

The Australian Women in Wine Awards would not be possible without the support of the individual award sponsors (as above) and partners – especially their Gold Partners: Pernod-Ricard Winemakers, Vintrace, Cru and Wine Business Magazine.
