Penfolds history in the Coonawarra Wine Region began in 1960 with the purchase of the first vineyard block. At the time, the area was still emerging as a premium wine region, though its now-famous terra rossa soils over weathered limestone held immense potential.
At the time Penfolds Chief Winemaker Max Schubert was unsure whether the region’s cool climate could deliver the fruit ripeness essential for the Penfolds House Style. The landmark success of the 1962 Bin 60A, blending Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon with Kalimna Shiraz – cemented Coonawarra’s place in Penfolds regions.
Vineyard management has progressed substantially since Penfolds arrived in the region, with the fruit from Coonawarrra now contributing to many of Penfolds Bin range including Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz, Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, Bin 169 Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon and Penfolds Grange.
Today, Penfolds Coonawarra vineyards span 200 hectares, exclusively planted with red varieties, including Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. These vineyards supply fruit for some of our most sought-after wines, such as Bin 128 Coonawarra Shiraz, Bin 389 Cabernet Shiraz, Bin 407 Cabernet Sauvignon, and Bin 707 Cabernet Sauvignon.
The Coonawarra Wine Region is integral to Penfolds winemaking legacy, producing exceptional Coonawarra red wines that reflect the unique terroir of this world-renowned area.
