Koonara is a small family owned and organic certified winery in the heart of Coonawarra.
Our Cellar Door is on the main street of Penola, come and try our wines and browse our unique range of homewares and kitchenware – you’ll find everything you need to host the perfect dinner party.
In 1906, my great grandfather, Henry Albert, named the family property ‘Koonara’. More than 100 years on, we still live on the Koonara family property, surrounded by our vineyards.
We are practising vineyard bio-diversity, and are the first vineyard in Coonawarra to be Certified to Australian Organic Standards. We only use organic elements on our vines; not only because it’s safer for our family, but it helps build complexity in our grapes.
And we love weeds. We let selected weeds grow long to attract good bugs which eat our bad bugs, so we have no need for pesticides.
We have low yielding vineyards; however this doesn’t mean we have less grapes. Our grapes are smaller, which means more skin per litre. Because the colour and flavour in wine comes from the skin, we can create complex flavours.
At Koonara we have a team of great people. The former Wynns Coonawarra head winemaker Peter Douglas, makes our wine. Our friendly Cellar Door team, and cellar door dog Buster, would love to see you for a tasting!
