Koonara is a small family-owned and organically-certified winery in the heart of Coonawarra.
Located on the Main Street of Penola, Koonara’s Cellar Door offers more than just wine tastings, with a unique range of homewares and kitchenware – you’ll find everything you need to host the perfect dinner party.
In 1906, Henry Albert, (Owner, Dru Reschke’s great grandfather) named the family property ‘Koonara’. More than 100 years on, the Reschke family still live on the Koonara family property, surrounded by the vineyards.
Koonara prides themselves on their vineyard bio-diversity practices, and are the first and only vineyards in Coonawarra to be Certified to Australian Organic Standards, since 2017. Only organic elements are used on their vines; a choice made not only because it helps build complexity in their grapes, but because it is safer for their family.
Owners Dru and Nicole Reschke are weed lovers, allowing selected weeds to grow long in their vineyards, a practice that attracts good bugs to replace bad insects, thus removing the need for pesticides.
Koonara has low-yielding vineyards; however, this doesn’t result in less grapes. Their grape berries are smaller, which means more skin per litre. Because the colour and flavour in wine come from the skin, complex flavours can be created.
Former Wynns Coonawarra head winemaker Peter Douglas is now winemaker at Koonara and together with Dru & Nicole, have developed award-winning wine that has below organic levels of sulphur and low/no residual sugars. The friendly Cellar Door team, and Cellar Door dog Buster, would love to see you for a tasting!
