The Langton’s Classification is the premier guide to Australian fine wines, renowned internationally for setting the benchmark for Australia’s finest. Entry is based on track record. Only the best and most sought-after make the cut.
Coonawarra is again celebrating it’s inclusion in the most recent release of the Langton’s Classification VII this month, with 13 wines from a total of 9 wineries represented over 3 categories.
The Langton’s Classification, now in its 30th year, bases eligibility on how well a wine performs on the open auction market; the volume of demand it attracts and the prices it realises.
The two basic requirements for inclusion in the Classification are that a wine has been made for a minimum of 10 vintages and that it has a track record in the secondary market.
Revised every four to five years, Langton’s outlines, “ultimately, the reputation of a wine is based on its auction pedigree – the record it builds up, over time.” “The wine scene is constantly moving – fashions, personalities and perceptions change. Rarity and value also play their part.”
The inclusion of Coonawarra wines in the Classification underlines the exceptional quality of both the region’s viticulture and winemaking.
